Smarter Than a Babysitter

Are you really smarter than a babysitter?
Think about the role of the babysitter. Is it to monitor children, feed and put them to sleep while parents are out at play?
The truth is parents rarely think about the roles of the babysitter, and how the responsibility of a parent transfers to the babysitter the moment parents head to a peaceful dinner or movie date. Unfortunately, a babysitter unprepared for unexpected events or emergencies can result in disappointing results. Yet, few parents consider the liabilities they will face as a result of poor planning.
In efforts to secure safety, parents should understand the following job description of the traditional babysitter.
• A qualified babysitter should be able to develop a safety plan customized for the parent(s), or follow a designed safety plan created by the parent(s). A good safety plan addresses possible hazards, exits and points of entry, and appropriate play areas.
• In addition to having and following a well-developed safety plan, a babysitter should be familiar with the medical conditions of each child, including but not limited to physical, psychological, and emotional conditions. This valuable information will allow the assigned babysitter to schedule safe activities that will meet the needs of each child.
• The babysitter should also be able to communicate effectively, and demonstrate the ability to delegate tasks or orders. He/she should be able to reason and solve complex problems related to health, safety, and various types of emergencies. This excludes the ability to dial 911.
• He/she should be familiar with using a first aid kit, AED unit, fire extinguisher, and a simple thermometer.
• Last but not least, a babysitter should have a basic understanding of stages of childhood and maintain a business-like attitude. This state of mind sets the stage for quick responses when necessary.
The job description above is indeed extensive, yet appropriate. As a result, it is recommended parents schedule an interview with possible candidates to identify whether the role of the babysitter can be adequately filled.
